Acura's 2.4-liter Four produces 201hp at 7000 rpm and 170 lb-ft of torque at 4300 rpm, and has to be revved pretty hard for emphatic acceleration. But the i-VTEC variable valve-timing and lift system works well at distributing reasonable power throughout the engine's speed range.

Equipped with electronic throttle control and sophisticated transmission technologies such as grade logic and shift-hold control, the TSX promises a good combination of refinement and response. A torque-sensing, variable electric-power-steering system is fitted, along with four-wheel disc brakes, with ABS, EBD and brake assist.

With the same 106.4-inch wheelbase as the TSX sedan and just a 3.6 inch-longer overall length, the Sport Wagon's chassis features control arms up front and a multilink system at the rear. A lateral bar ties the front shock towers together for added rigidity, while the rear subframe has reinforced attachment points. Dual-mode dampers are standard. Particular attention was paid to body rigidity, and the tailgate has what Acura calls a hoop cross-section structure. The result is a vehicle that weighs some 132 pounds more than the sedan but feels as taut as a drum.

The TSX Sport Wagon boasts generous cargo capacity. Acura large-project leader Kozaburo Nakai claims there are 61 cubic feet of volume when the rear seatbacks are stowed and points out that this is more than either the BMW 3-series or Audi A4 wagons. The rear compartment features hidden under-floor storage compartments and a flat cargo floor.

Fuel economy was not ignored during the makeover, and the 2.4-liter inline Four improves by 1 mpg in each category to 22 city, 31 highway and 26 combined. Acura's navigation system as supplied in the optional Technology package has been upgraded, with a high-resolution LED screen, a faster processing speed as a result of the hard-drive technology, and added features.

A new real-time weather-reporting system is incorporated, and it warns of bad weather along the selected route as well as displaying a real-time Doppler map overlay. A hands-free Bluetooth link is controlled through the screen display. The standard audio equipment features seven speakers and 360 watts of output, with a single CD player and USB input, and it sounds great. The optional ELS system offers 10 speakers, 460 watts and linkage with up to six iPods. That one's just indescribably good.
